William Sylvester Carter

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, William Carter studied art at The Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1930s and holds a BFA from the University of Illinois. Carter’s presence in Chicago represents more than a half a century of creative visual expression. His work with the Works Progress Administration was one of the highlights of his career, giving him access to major galleries and a work stipend.

As a master of form, color and design, Carter drew upon the experiences of the black community in Chicago for figurative inspiration. His awards include the John Hope Award, Atlanta University American Negro Exposition and the E. Sims Campbell Award. Collections of his work can be found at the University of Illinois and DuSable High School in Chicago.
